Water
Quality Microbiology
We have designed, managed and monitored many projects related to the
microbiology of rivers, lakes, and soils as part of baseline studies
or in remediation efforts. Water quality issues are a specialty. We
have specific application interests in public health, organics, and
metals/mining issues. In addition, we have an emerging program in
bacterial source tracking (BST) and have a current project in Glacier
National Park using DNA fingerprinting to track the source of E. coli
in Park waters.
Natural
resource damage assessments
We have worked with natural resource damage claims in the Clark Fork
River Superfund site for a decade and have developed sensitive methods
of using microbial communities to detect damages in both soil and
river sediment.
We specialize in generating the
information that bests addresses the clients needs. For example, the
data below was was used to determine whether it was heavy metals or
the associated lowering of soil pH that was most responsible for the
observed lowering of soil respiration and therefore soil productivity.
